This is a pledge that many of us take quite frequently with our hand over our heart at gatherings of all kinds.

Our Pledge

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

I made it just the other day at my granddaughter’s ball game in Greeneville. I believe in this pledge and the “Republic for which it stands” but I see our “indivisibility” as “one nation under God” deteriorating under the influence of manipulative and sinister forces.

The ”United States of America” is not just a confederacy of 50 states, it’s a revolutionary IDEA in human history set forth by a group of brilliant men we call the “Founding Fathers” who, at the birth of this great nation, made a Declaration of Independence, created a Bill of Rights, and wrote a Constitution for all of us to live by in pursuit of happiness with liberty and justice for all. The novel concept that all men are created equal, endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights and are capable of self-governance is being tested in the digital age like never before. These documents have been the guide to our unparallelled success as a sovereign nation, but we are straying dangerously far away from them. They are the beacon of light that has given America the vision to be great, but that light is dimming.

This is a solemn oath I’ve taken twice in my life, once when I enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1976 at the age of 17, and again when I was accepted into the Coast Guard Academy in 1979.

I, Carter Matheson Quillen, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.”

Despite having taken that oath over 40 years ago, I still believe in it and in our Constitution. I am prepared, both physically and mentally, to defend it and to bear true faith and allegiance to it. I feel duty bound as an able minded American Citizen in these troubling times to stand up for what I believe is right and that is why I’m running to be your representative to the U.S. Congress in the 1st District of Tennessee.

This is my solemn oath to you, the Voter:

I pledge to labor tirelessly on your behalf to reverse these insidious trends. To work in Washington to find the truth and convey it directly to you. But most importantly, I will strive in everything I do to emphasize the things we have in common as Americans, not vilify and berate the people I disagree with, to focus on returning our government to its constitutional foundations, and to restore the role of honesty and integrity in government while bearing true faith and allegiance to the constitution at all times so that…

“a government of the People, by the People and for the People, shall not perish from the Earth”
